Suffering For Beauty's Sake

How far would you go to stay beautiful? The answer depends on where you live and society's definition of beauty. Before women "tortured" themselves with plastic surgery, Botox, and other painful cosmetic procedures, they had to endure more barbaric beauty rituals to look good.
"Adhering to the modern American standard of beauty is no small task. It demands time, money, and effort. We, as a culture, subject ourselves to invasive surgical procedures and food deprivation in the name of aesthetics. But bizarre beauty rituals are certainly not new phenomena. Since the beginning of civilization, people have altered their bodies in strange and
uncomfortable ways to fit cultural perceptions of beauty. These standards are constantly evolving and regressing based on the culture that sets them," said Cecilia Estriech in VersusMag.Org.
Cosmetics were first used by the Egyptians in 4,000 B.C. although history shows that the ancient Greeks and Romans were also concerned about their appearance. A pale appearance was prized in those days and mercury, lead, and chalk were worn to achieve this effect.
This trend continued until the Middle Ages among European women where paleness was associated with, tribal face painting , wealth. Having a tan in those days meant you were a laborer who worked in the fields so the rich used make-up to emphasize their paleness and affluence. Sixth-century women achieved this effect by bleeding themselves using leeches or by cupping (drawing blood by heating air in a glass cup). Fashion Magazines - Friend Or Foe?

Ilove clothes. For me, clothing is a form of self-expression just like paint on a canvas is a form of expression for an artist. So, over the years I've been known to scour the pages, face painting and design , of fashion magazines for ideas. Sometimes I buy the magazines in the store, other times I subscribe to them for a year or more. Often times, when I flip through the pages, I get inspiration to combine colors, textures or styles in a way I hadn't thought of in the past.
I've known for years that fashion magazines are filled with unrealistic, computer-enhanced images. I know that many models have eating disorders and drug problems and I know that many young women aspire to look like models and therefore, face painting and design , become victims of eating disorders, compulsive dieting, body dissatisfaction, drug use, smoking and more. I know because I was one of those girls.
But I figured since I "know better" now, since I'm smart enough to see beneath the surface, that there's no harm in looking at the magazine for fashion ideas, face painting and design , . It was only this past week, after the mailperson delivered a 500 page copy of one of my favorite fashion magazines that it all began to hit me. I sat at the table eating cereal and flipping through the pages one at a time.
I oogled a $500 purse and a $200 pair of shoes. I saw pictures of $1,000 dollar watches. Page after page was permeated with items that would break my bank if I were to purchase them. I realized that I was literally paying money out of my pocket to be advertised to. I was paying for a 500 page manual which might as well have been titled: 500 pages of things you will never be, do or have.
I realized I was paying to look at and read lies. Even though I "know better", face painting and design , on a conscious level, there was still a little girl part of me that wanted "that purse", "those shoes" and "that watch," even if they were all incredibly overpriced and sure to wreak havoc on my financial future and my self-esteem.
On this particular day, looking at the fashion magazine wasn't enjoyable, it was infuriating., face painting and design , I suppose this fury has been working it's way out over the, face painting and design , past few months. There was the time when I saw the picture, face painting and design , of Madonna in a Versace ad and it hit me: she doesn't have a wrinkle or a smile line or crow's feet. Not one sign of being a mother of two, over 40 and a woman with an incredibly demanding, face painting and design , career that spanned several decades. I thought to myself, "that's impossible." It wasn't a jealous or envious thought, I meant it very literally. It is impossible. Computer enhancement and heavy duty make-up is the only logical explanation for the flawless face I saw.
I decided to put my emotions and judgments in check and get objective about what I saw. I performed an unofficial research project and scanned the pages of this 500 page magazine to get an accurate account of what I had been absorbing mindlessly month after month and year after, face painting and design , year. Here's what I learned: of the 500 pages, 300 were full-page ads. 172 pages were ads that pretended to be fashion advice, party advice and editorial content. Let's get real, when the fashion advice includes the name, phone number and website of the store and the price of the item, it truly is an ad. About 30 pages of the magazine were not technically ads but they were things like: "This star likes this" or, "This star does that." Three of the pages, face painting and design , were public service ads (I believe this is a requirement). So, there you have it, my 500 page contained 472 ads and approximately 30 pages of "content." And I'm the sucker who sent the check in to cover the yearly subscription fee.
Now after this informal research project, I was beginning to get a little steamed up. Then, my friend Cindy e-mails me a link to the Dove website (campaignforrealbeauty.com) I go there and watch a 30-second video that shows a sped up version of all that goes into your typical fashion photo shoot. The 30-second video clip encapsulates the, face painting and design , hours of time spent on hair, make-up, lighting, professional photography techniques and computer enhancement that takes place before an ad is published or broadcast. When I say the magazine ads are unrealistic and unattainable, I mean it. Because not even the model looks like the model!
So, I've made a decision. I am boycotting all fashion magazines. I will never purchase another one again. I will not spend my money on lies and images that lead to self-hatred, deadly behaviors and oppression for women. I, face painting and design , know that money is power and I refuse to spend my money on harmful lies that destroy the lives of many women.
I know that my few dollars will not be a big loss to the mega-rich publishing industry but I think it's important for all women to realize that in a very real way we do not have to buy the hype. I mean that in two ways. We do not have to buy the magazines with our money and, face painting and design , we don't have to buy the lies that reside within their pages. We can also decide to support designers and manufacturers that promote positive images for women. We can choose to withhold our dollars from companies that exploit women whether it's the model or the sweat shop worker that sews the clothing.
If a full boycott of fashion magazines is not for you, you always have the power to write advertisers when you see images that are harmful or ridiculous. These letters do make a difference.
Now, as far as my fashion inspiration, I decided that if my clothes truly are to be a form of self-expression then I will decide for myself what textures, colors and styles I want to combine. I'm a grown woman living in a free country. I don't need a magazine to tell me how I should dress.

Battling breast cancer, kids face painting ideas , can be more manageable when you have the support and encouragement of friends and family. Co-survivors know breast cancer affects everyone. "People should not have to face a life-threatening disease alone," says Susan Brown, RN, a health education manager, kids face painting ideas , at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. "Strength is in numbers."
The Komen Co-Survivor Program acknowledges, educates and empowers family members, friends and health care providers of breast cancer survivors. "These are the people who are there for breast cancer survivors through diagnosis, treatment and beyond," Brown said.
Although the Foundation meets co-survivors' needs by providing educational information and practical tips, the program also enables co-survivors to help each other by sharing support, ideas and advice on-line. The site offers these suggestions based on co-survivors' past experiences.

One Size Pyramid Doesn't Fit All

The old one consisted of the "Four Basic Food Groups" that you remember growing up with as a kid. Too many kids today are faced with weight problems due to poor eating habits and lack of exercise.
MyPyramid is by design simple and encourages healthier food choices including whole grains and high fiber foods along with daily exercise.
Six bands of color from the peak of MyPyramid to the base indicate: orange for grains, green for vegetables, red for fruits, a tiny band of yellow for oils, blue for milk, and purple for meat and beans. The widths suggest the amount of food a person should select from each group.
A little figure running up the stairs acts as a reminder to get some exercise. Unfortunately, no mention is made of the differences between aerobic and anaerobic exercise, or the role of strength training
The new guidelines distinguish between 'grains' and 'whole grains', essential when choosing fiber-rich foods. The right teacher allows, praises, and encourages pure expression of self.
Creativity isn't just about art. Art is just an example. Cooking a meal with love and arranging it beautifully, face painting designs , on the plate is a work of creativity. Planning or planting a garden or a window box is a creative act. Walking down the road and daydreaming is a creative act. Starting a business is a creative act. What it creates isn't pleasant, but it means you don't have to face anyone who might see the truth of you - that you aren't loveable, or clever, or artistic, or have any value whatsoever.
Dependence.
In a loving relationship with a caring partner,, face painting designs , there is often an unhealthy dependence. This is frequently because of the partner's need to be needed. This is the most difficult aspect I face treating this problem, because the partner's need to be needed resists, and occasionally even sabotages, the changes that I'm trying to bring about.

Right now, in the safety of the fear, all of those things seem horrific and just thinking about them will produce an intense anxiety re-action simply because you can't see how you can get from where you are to where you want to be without lots of pain. So it's probably safer to stay where you are.
Nothing to Live For.
If there is no interest in life, no fascination for the world, or an aspect of it, no joy, or pleasure; if every morning when you wake, your waking thought is 'Oh no! How will I get through today.'; if every moment of that day is longing for nighttime and the oblivion of sleep; then you will experience no drive to be well, face painting designs , . If you want to change, if you want to be free of this incapacitating fear that is destroying your life, then you have to want freedom. Seems a bit harsh that, but agoraphobia is what you do to yourself when your world becomes so intolerable that you'll go insane if you don't find a way to escape from it. And that's exactly what your subconscious mind does, without your permission; it creates a way for you to escape. What it creates isn't pleasant, but it means you don't have to face anyone who might see the truth of you - that you aren't loveable, or clever, or artistic, or have any value whatsoever.
Dependence.
In a loving relationship with a caring partner,, face painting designs , there is often an unhealthy dependence. This is frequently because of the partner's need to be needed. This is the most difficult aspect I face treating this problem, because the partner's need to be needed resists, and occasionally even sabotages, the changes that I'm trying to bring about.
This problem is again born from your childhood if you were raised with:
- Parents who, because of their own beliefs about what was in your best interests, failed to ensure that you experienced, face painting designs , the world in safe ways - on your own.
- An early life that didn't provide you with challenges to overcome.
- Parent's, teachers, significant adults who found it difficult to watch, face painting designs , you fail (and learn) and gave constant correction or took over when a task wasn't being completed fast enough or accurately enough.
- Adults, face painting designs , who were over-critical, creating this feeling of inadequacy that leaves you with a sense of 'I can't do it on my own' I need you there 'just in case…'
Fear of the Cure.
At the end of the day, if you want to be free of this problem, you know that you will be able to go out whenever and wherever you want. You will have to go out alone. You will have to go shopping in supermarkets, go to theatres, travel in trains and planes. You will have to make decisions and choices for yourself. You will have to do things that others may look at and judge unfavourably.
Right now, in the safety of the fear, all of those things seem horrific and just thinking about them will produce an intense anxiety re-action simply because you can't see how you can get from where you are to where you want to be without lots of pain. So it's probably safer to stay where you are.
Nothing to Live For.
If there is no interest in life, no fascination for the world, or an aspect of it, no joy, or pleasure; if every morning when you wake, your waking thought is 'Oh no! How will I get through today.'; if every moment of that day is longing for nighttime and the oblivion of sleep; then you will experience no drive to be well, face painting designs , . If you want to change, if you want to be free of this incapacitating fear that is destroying your life, then you have to want freedom. You have to want it, face painting designs , more than you want to stay in bed. You have to want it more than you want to sleep.
Lack of Play/Fun.
What do, face painting designs , young children do more than anything else - play. They turn everything into a game as long as they are contented. What don't adults get much of? Play. You need to play. You need to be playful in your approach to life. Life can be serious all on its own. It doesn't need your help. You can have fun and it won't mind. When was the last time you had a good laugh? When was the last time you knocked a ball around without trying to win or beat anyone? When was the last time you flew a, face painting designs , kite without needing to have a bigger/better/faster/more colourful kite than everyone else? When was the last time you made a mud pie? When was the last time you wore a funny hat?
Lack of Regular Exercise.
Lack of regular exercise - for obvious reasons is also a factor of significance. Exercise releases endorphins, which raise your mood state. It lets your body know you care about it and a sense of routine is always important to the healing of any psychological illness.
